Budgeting for Curb Appeal
by Richard Hiers, First Team Real Estate

You don't have to wait until you're thinking of selling you home to improve its curb appeal. You can do it now, inexpensively, to improve your enjoyment of it while at the same time improving its property value. Below are some tips that improve curb appeal without spending a lot.

  • Prune back plants that have grown above the bottom of your windows and that brush up against the house. Dig up overgrown bushes and stumps, replacing them with younger, more attractive plants.
  • Trim back any tree branches that touch the house or overly block the home's view from the street.
  • Use weather-resistant furniture near the front doorway to extend living space outdoors.
  • Power-wash the exterior of the home, driveway, and walkways.
  • Polish the doorknob and lock, and put out a new welcome mat.
  • Add a splash of fashion outside using items such as a decorative planter, ornamental fence, distinctive mailbox, seasonal banners, yard sculpture, concrete bench, bird bath, path lighting, etc.
  • Keep the kid's toys in the backyard, and store recreation vehicles and boats off site.
  • If need be, get out that paintbrush. Paint doesn't cost a lot, and it can do wonders for improving curb appeal.
